It was a highly physical and emotional game between Gilas Pilipinas and Russian club Spartak Primorye on Tuesday as they faced each other on the 37th William Jones Cup at the Xinchuang Gymnasium in New Taipei City, Taiwan.
Russian baller Alimdzhan Fediushin throw an elbow on Gilas starting center Sonny Thoss which left him bloodied during the opening minutes of the first quarter. No-call was made by the referee.

Later on, Fedushin was caught flicking the ball on Terrence Romeo’s face after the Gilas rookie exchanged cheap shots with Spartak top gunner Aleksei Goliakhov. Goliakhov flailed his arm and hit Romeo on the face and fell to the floor in front of the referee, who did not blow his whistle.
Gilas center Asi Taulava charged toward Fediushin after seeing him throwing the ball on Romeo’s face but was immediately restrained. Romeo and Fediushin were assessed with a technical foul each.
Gilas still managed to pull off an 85-71 victory for a 2-1 record while giving Russians a taste of their first loss in 4 games. They are set to face Japan on September 2 at 3pm.
