It became a hot trending topic on Twitter as fans were shocked, outraged and disappointed after finding out that their most beloved Sanrio character is not a cat after all. Even famous celebrities can’t help themselves but to react.
According to Christine R. Yano, an anthropologist at the University of Hawaii who has spent years studying Hello Kitty:
“I was corrected — very firmly. That’s one correction Sanrio made for my script for the show. Hello Kitty is not a cat. She’s a cartoon character. She is a little girl. She is a friend. But she is not a cat. She’s never depicted on all fours. She walks and sits like a two-legged creature. She does have a pet cat of her own, however, and it’s called Charmmy Kitty”.
However, in an article posted on Kotaku.com, the viral news that Hello Kitty is not a cat was debunked. Sanrio spokesperson stated that it is going too far to say that Hello Kitty was not a cat.
“When Kotaku called Sanrio’s Tokyo headquarters today and asked whether or not Hello Kitty was indeed a cat, a spokesperson explained, “Hello Kitty was done in the motif of a cat. It’s going too far to say that Hello Kitty is not a cat. Hello Kitty is a personification of a cat.”
And although most headlines says Hello Kitty is human, Kotaku emphasized that Yano only stated that Hello Kitty is a girl and never said that Hello Kitty is a human.
So for all Hello Kitty fans, rejoice! Hello Kitty is a cat – well, just an anthropomorphic cat, a personification of a cat.
