Tab Baldwin will take the place of Coach Chot Reyes as the head coach of the men’s national basketball team.
The 56-year-old coach has signed for the next 4 years, according to Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas Executive Director Sonny Barrios with the option to renew for another year if we qualify for the 2019 FIBA World Cup.
Baldwin was selected over former national coach Jong Uichico after a a search committee formed by the Philippine basketball federation conducted a screening process last November.
His first tournament as the new Gilas Coach is the 2015 FIBA Asia Championship in Wuhan, China which will give us a chance to compete in the 2016 Rio Olympics if we win the tournament.
Baldwin has been with the Gilas Pilipinas as consultant since 2013. The American-New Zealander helped Gilas Pilipinas achieve a silver medal finish in the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship and qualify for the World Cup. He was consultant up until the Asian Games.
