Rappler, Vera Files not enough as fact checkers- Senator accuses FB of political Bias

Senator Nancy Binay is unsatisfied that Rappler and Vera Files are the only entities that serve as Facebook partners in fact checking to fight against fake news.

Recently Facebook announced their initiative to help combat fake news and support accurate news.

The social media giant has just partnered with Rappler and Vera Files to help make sure the information appear on the public news feed is accurate, especially during elections and breaking news cycles.

Meanwhile Binay also mentioned that additional media outlets must be included as fact checkers.

“Perhaps you can add aside from Rappler, Vera Files, maybe there are other media outlets that can be fact checkers,” Binay said.

According to media report, Binay stressed that the social media platform should be proactive in cleaning the sources of fake news.

“Facebook at least they did something and it’s good to see if it’s going to be an effective strategy. If it does not become effective, they need to find other ways that Facebook is clean from fake news, “Binay said.

Binay also added that the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Cyber Crime Division must also take measures against the trolls running on Twitter.

Senate Majority Leader Vicente ‘Tito’ Sotto III on the otherhand called out Facebook and its decision as biased because of their choice of groups who are opposed to the administration.

“FB has again shown bias by tapping two groups to partner for monitoring when these groups are completely anti-admin,” Sotto said.

He also encouraged other media outlets to get in touch with Facebook to become Fact-checkers.

Some Duterte supporters threaten to leave Facebook for Russia’s VK.
