Among the Beauty With A Purpose finalists are England’s Carina Tyrrell and South Africa’s Rolene Strauss, two of the favorites to win the Miss World 2014 title. Tyrrell also made the top five for the Multimedia challenge, while Strauss did so for Sports, Beach Fashion, and Top Model. Other early front-runners include Miss India Koyal Rana, Miss Australia Courtney Thorpe and Miss Russia Anastasia Kostenko, according to British oddsmaker Ladbrokes.
While the crowning of Miss World 2014 will be a grandest pageant of the year, this year’s competition has been somewhat marred by tragedy. Just days before the early rounds were set to begin, Miss Honduras María José Alvarado and her sister, Sofia, were found shot to death in their home country. Authorities believe the sister’s boyfriend, Plutarco Antonio Ruiz, killed the duo after seeing Sofia dancing with another guy at a party.
“We are devastated by this terrible loss of two young women, who were so full of life,” Miss World Chairman Julie Morley said in a statement before the 2014 pageant. “We are receiving messages of condolences and support from our Miss World family across the world, who all share our sadness at such a tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of María José Alvarado & Sofía Trinidad at this time of grief.”
