Two US journalists, WDBJ7 TV reporter Alison Parker, 24, and cameraman Adam Ward, 27, have been shot dead during a live TV broadcast in Virginia.
Augusta County Sheriff’s Office has named the shooter, Vester Lee Flanagan II — who went by Bryce Williams on air. He uploaded a video of himself shooting the reporter at close range on his Twitter and Facebook accounts which have now been suspended.
The incident happened at an outdoor shopping mall, Bridgewater Plaza, near Smith Mountain Lake. Parker was doing an interview with Vicki Gardner, executive director of the Smith Mountain Lake Regional Chamber of Commerce, who was shot in the back but is in stable condition after undergoing surgery according to police reports.
WDBJ president and general manager Jeffrey A. Marks confirmed that Williams used to work at the station but was dismissed two years ago. He described him as “an unhappy man” who was dismissed after he “quickly became known for a reputation for being difficult to work with.”
After a five-hour manhunt, Flanagan, died at a Fairfax, Virginia, hospital at about 1:30 p.m., seven hours after the shooting incident. Police reports said that he shot himself.
