Ateneo Lady Eagles Escape Five-Setter Game Against UP Lady Maroons

The Ateneo Lady Eagles‘ record remains unblemished after they escaped an exciting and thrilling five-setter game against the UP Lady Maroons as the UAAP Women’s Volleyball resumes Sunday afternoon at the Filoil Flying-V Arena in San Juan City.

The ‘Battle of Katipunan’ started with the Lady Eagles taking an early lead on the first set and winning it, 25-18.

But the Lady Maroons displayed a different level of volleyball during the second set led by Kathy Bersola, Angeli Araneta and Nicole Tiamzon who came in full battle gear as they gave Ateneo a taste of their first set loss of the season, 25-22.

The defending champion bounces back on the third set despite the reigning MVP Alyssa Valdez playing not in her A game. They took the third set, 25-20.

The Lady Eagles dropped another set as The Lady Maroons played effective teamwork and excellent defense on the fourth set and put them on the edge, 25-15.

In the end, Valdez, who struggled almost the entire match with several hitting errors, still managed to end the game with 25 points on 20 spikes, three blocks, and two aces and helped Ateneo survive a scare from UP ending the fifth set (15-11) and the match (3-2).

Setter Jia Morado was chosen as Player of the Game with 3 points and 42 excellent sets. Bea de Leon added 12 and Amy Ahomiro chipped in 11 markers. UP Team Captain Nicole Tiamzon finished the game with 22 points on 21 attacks. Kathy Bersola scored 12 and Angeli Araneta added 11 for UP.
