BELGIUM is on high security alert after police killed two jihadists and arrested a third after discovering they were
involved in “a terrorist attack on a grand scale” plot.
Shots and explosions were heard, including machine gun fire, as heavily armed, masked officers moved against the alleged cell in the eastern town of Verviers, which is some 70 miles from Brussels.
Security services acted after receiving intelligence that up to 10 jihadists recently returned from fighting in Syria were planning an assault on police stations, Express reported.
Witnesses described hearing three or four explosions and dozens of shots ringing out during the raid on an apartment above a bakery in Verviers in eastern Belgium.
The apartment had been surrounded by police and other flats in the block evacuated.
No police officials or witnesses were hurt and search warrants were executed in 10 locations after it was learned that terrorist attacks were “imminent”.
