5.4-magnitude Quake Hits Batangas On New Year’s Eve; Tremor Felt In Metro Manila

A 5.4-magnitude earthquake near Batangas was experienced around 5:26 p.m. Wednesday (December 31, 2014).

The US Geological Survey reported that the center’s geographic coordinates is at 13.777N, 120.720E, the quake was felt 7 kilometers south-southeast of Hukay in Calatagan, Batangas, 17 kilometers south of Balayan, and 95 kilometers south-southwest of Manila, Inquirer reported.

Around 3:08 p.m., the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reported a 3.3-magnitude earthquake 40-kilometers east of General Luna in Surigao del Norte. The quake was tectonic in nature and had a depth of focus of 9 kilometers.

Phivolcs said the quake was felt at Intensity III in Quezon City and Calatagan.

Netizens on Twitter said the tremor was felt in different parts of Metro Manila.
