Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has uploaded a video of young Filipina sharing how her life changed from collecting seashells to becoming the first person in their family to earn a college degree.
The Filipina, Riza, used the Internet.org app to work with her groupmates on their thesis despite being unable to meet up with them in person because of a typhoon.
The video has gone viral, gaining 2.026 million views in just five hours.
“This is an amazing story about Riza — a young woman on a small island where the only job for women was collecting seashells, yet she used Internet.org to earn a degree in computer science,” Zuckerberg said.
“Being connected means having opportunity. We’re going to connect the whole world so one day everyone can achieve their full human potential — just like Riza,” he added.
In the video, Riza narrated she lived on an island where “the only job for women is gathering seashells,” but added that she wanted something greater for herself.
She would study Computer Science at the local Information Technology center, traveling by boat daily just to get to school.
