Croatian boxer Vido Loncar was suspended from boxing for life by the National Boxing Federation Tuesday after he attacked and knocked down the referee at the European Youth championship.
Loncar lost to the Lithuanian boxer, Algirdas Baniulis. Unhappy with the result of the match, Loncar attacked Polish referee Magej Dziurgot and knocked him down after hitting him several times.
Baniulis fled the ring during the attack while others stopped Loncar by dragging him by his ankles out from the ring.
Loncar was detained after the attack while the referee was hospitalized.
The Croatian federation issued a statement of apology regarding the incident.
“This is the worst thing which could have happened, a big shame for Zagreb and Croatia,” the federation’s secretary general Marko Marovic said quoted by the state-run HRT television. All the efforts that we have put into organization of this championship and boosting of the image of Croatia’s boxing was destroyed in a few seconds.”
The European Youth Championship is currently taking place in the Croatian capital from October 17 to 26.
