The pic shows: The mice served in the breakfast. A woman in south-eastern China's Fujian Province has caused heated debate after posting a picture of her morning breakfast of boiled mice served up by her mother. Chen Wan said she was fed the bowl of boiled mice for breakfast after her mum told her that she was looking pale, and that rodents had "many health benefits". Chan, 26, from the provincial capital Fuzhou City, said: "My mother brought the bowl in for breakfast and I saw there were three mice inside. I thought they were baby rabbits, but she said they were mice. It was revolting. I was planning to just skip breakfast and go to work." But Chen's mother, she said, is a strong believer in Chinese medicine, which has a proverb that says "one mouse (rat) is better than three chickens". The rodents are supposedly good for hair growth, and for beautifying one's hair, but neither claim has been scientifically proven. Chen added: "She told me that it was good for my health; she believes it's a sort of tonic for the body. She told me it look her a long time to cook, and then reminded me that it was one of the traditional foods of our ancestors. "She told me she had removed the hair so I shouldn't complain, and had even added a gravy to make them taste better and easier to swallow. In the end I just closed my eyes and ate them." Chen said it was "the most disgusting thing" she ever ate. She continued: "I wanted the throw up all morning. Never again." She said her mother got the mice from her brother, who feeds them to his pet python. Experts have urged citizen to not eat mice and rats, as, contrary to ancient sayings, mice and rats do not have any more health benefits than chicken, or beef or pork for that matter. In fact, experts said eating mice and rats could have potentially harmful effects, as they carry many diseases. The selling of rats and mice for the purpose of eating is strictly forbidden by Chinese state law, according to the country's Law on the Control of Communicable Diseases, and Law on Food Hygiene. However the mother Chan Yuan, 55, managed to get round the ruling by using mice sold to feed the snake. (ends)
