On 17 July 2014, flight MH17 went down, crashing in Eastern Ukraine near the Russian border. One year later, New Corp Australia revealed shocking video footage of the immediate aftermath, when the downed debris was found.
Initially, the pro-Russian Ukrainian separatist fighters thought they had shot down a government plane. Sifting through the debris, they quickly realized it was a passenger flight. This was determined by sifting through the passenger’s luggage.
Then, the fighters comments concerned the matter of who gave them permission to fly through that area – knowing it was an active war zone. These are valid concerns regarding aviation safety, and they need to be addressed before another such incident occurs.
