A 35 year old shoplifting woman is dead after jumping 25 feet from the first level of a parking garage to the ground. She was running from store security at the time, and was also aware of the drop. Although witnesses said they heard her being told to “stay away from the edge” she obviously didn’t listen.
This “edge” was the barrier of the parking lot wall, and she had climbed to the top of it. The earlier shoplifting occurred in Nordstrom’s at the Providence Place mall in Rhode Island.
The woman had been taking items off the rack, then bringing them to the cashier for “returns”. Even though the crime was not a felony, she saw death as the only viable alternative to getting arrested and put in jail.
