UAAP 76 Women’s Volleyball reigning champ, Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagles, bagged the bronze medal in the Asean University Games in Palembang, Indonesia Sunday afternoon.
Representing the Philippines, the Lady Eagles led by Team Captain Alyssa Valdez, blasted Malaysia in straight set victory, 25-11, 25-11, 25-16.
This is the first time that the Ateneo Lady Eagles play outside the country and represented the Philippines.
“We are happy for this bronze medal finish, especially, for an inexperienced team like the Lady Eagles,” team manager Tony Boy Liao said.
“It’s their first time to play outside the country and represent the Philippines. I feel very proud of this team,” Liao said. “We offer and share our victory to the one Philippine Volleyball.”
Valdez scored 16 points while outside hitter and veteran Ella de Jesus contributed 14 points. Bea de Leon continued to stand out in international play as the Ateneo rookie contributed nine points, including two blocks. Sophomore Michelle Morente also scored nine points.
The Lady Eagles‘ victory is the country’s first international women’s volleyball medal since the 2005 Southeast Asian Games.
