MILF: 64 Elite Cops Were Killed, GOV’T: PEACE PROCESS Continues

Let us get down on our knees to honor and pray for the fallen; and reach out to their fathers, mothers, wives, children, girlfriends, buddies and others close to them.

Their death is another wake-up call for the government to shape up and do things right. How many more precious lives have to be sacrificed on the altar of insincerity, irresponsibility and incompetence?

Howling justice is the call of the hour for all those who caused this grief.

The members of the Philippine National Police-Special Action Force were brutally killed when they tried to serve an arrest warrant on a “high value target” in the area, believed to be a rebel stronghold.

About 50 police commandos who were about to serve an arrest warrant for a wanted Malaysian terrorist were waylaid by the MILF.

In a media report, the survivor said that the rebels took away the uniforms and night vision goggles from the police officers. They also used the firearms of the SAF members to shoot them at a close range.

To save himself, the survivor hid under the water lilies floating on a river. He was shot twice by a sniper but the rebels stopped pursuing him, thinking he was already dead.

Leaders of the MILF has said the government did not coordinate with them for the said operation.

Meanwhile, Mamasapano Mayor Benzar Ampatuan confirmed that two civilians were injured in the gun battle, which happened in Barangay Tukanalipao, it added.

Sources said the police operation was to serve an arrest warrant on Malaysian bombmaker Zulkifli Bin Hir, also known as “Marwan,” whose presence had been confirmed in the area. The US Federal Bureau of Investigation has offered a $5-million reward for information on “Marwan.”

The ARMM police has released the names of 41 PNP-SAF killed in action in Mamasapano, Maguindanao.

Several other bodies found at the site of the mis-encounter have not been identified.

MILF: 64 Elite Cops Were Killed, GOV’T: PEACE PROCESS Continues

The Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) reported on Monday that 64 bodies were recovered from the site of a clash between its fighters and police commandos on Sunday, Inquirer reported.

A report by MILF investigators, which was submitted to the MILF Central Committee, said the 64 bodies belonged to the US-trained police commandos who entered this town early on Sunday to serve warrants of arrest on Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) commander Basit Usman and Malaysian Zulkifli bin Hir, alias “Marwan,” a bomb expert linked to the Indonesia-based terrorist group Jemaah Islamiyah.

Marwan is on the US list of most wanted terrorists, with $5 million offered for his arrest. Usman has a $2-million price on his head. He is a local terrorist, not a Malaysian as earlier reported.

Marwan was reportedly killed during the clash, but Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin said the military was still investigating to see if the report was valid.

The MILF report said 36 of the slain policemen belonged to one police unit and 28 belonged to another unit. The units were not identified in the report.

Despite the bloody encounter, Philippine government said there was no change in the government’s stand on the Bangsamoro peace initiative.

The view of the government has not changed. The peace process is important in Mindanao, passing the Bangsamoro Basic Law is important, and we will continue to pursue the peace process.

The deadly clash has prompted Sen. Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to suspend hearings on the Bangsamoro Basic Law.
