Nathan Allen, an American travel blogger who has been promoting the Philippines through his website I Dream of This, has been declared persona non grata by the province of Sorsogon for his Facebook post stating disappointment over his stay in Donsol.
” A few days ago I decided to take a trip to see the whale sharks in Donsol, Sorsogon. I thought it would be good to inform their tourism officer of my arrival. They told me she was away, so I asked them to please text her for me. I left very detailed information about exactly who I was, and exactly why I was there. To be clear that I’m not just a “hobby blogger”, I mentioned that I had just come from Albay, where I was a guest of Governor Salceda.
It was a last minute trip, and I would understand if she wasn’t able to assist me in exploring the region. However, I was hoping she would at least send me a text offering some suggestions for a few attractions I could promote in Donsol.
I was disappointed that I never heard anything from her. I ended up booking a whale shark tour in the tourism office…
(PS…the whale sharks were awesome, but the Donsol tourism officials weren’t much help. I am pleased to announce that the day after my whale shark tour, I arrived in Masbate City (also last-minute), where the Vice Governor quickly heard and personally arranged a boat tour – that SAME day! Their assistance during my stay in Masbate will no doubt help me broadcast the warmth and beauty of this unique region to the world! I am thankful for that.)”
According to News report, “The Sangguniang Panglalawigan of Sorsogon declared blogger Nathan Allen, a citizen of United States, persona non grata to protest his derogatory remarks against the Donsol tourism office that was published in his “I dream of this” weblog last month.”
The resolution was filed by board member Frank Eric Ravanilla and was approved by the council during the last week of April.
In his post last April 14, 2015, Allen expressed his disappointment with the Department of Tourism (D.O.T.) which included a paragraph titled “Disappointed in Donsol”. He mentioned that the tourism officer was not around to entertain him and did not answer his calls nor texted him even though he was a guest of Governor Salceda. This caught the attention of Ravanilla to file a resolution against Allen.
According to CNN, Ravanilla said that his post may affect the local tourism in Donsol.
