Friend Or Food? Dog Meat Trade Divides China [Yulin Dog Meat Festival]

Every June at the summer solstice, thousands of dogs (exact numbers are unknown) are tortured and killed at the Yulin Dog Meat Festival in China. These dogs have been stolen from their families, picked up as strays, or raised in decrepit breeding facilities.  Before slaughter, the dogs are brutally tortured in the mistaken belief that the meat will taste better. LCA and groups like the Duo Duo Animal Welfare Project are working relentlessly to outlaw the Yulin Dog Meat Festival.

According to CNN news, as more young people move into the cities, they look to companion animals for comfort in the absence of the family members.

With their new found friendship with animals, this new generation of Chinese see cats and dogs as thinking, feeling individuals deserving of love and compassion. Most importantly, they are friends not food.

Up to 10,000 dogs and 10,000 cats are estimated to be killed each year during the barbarous event, which this year starts on June 22.

In preparation for the festival, the Humane Society International has filmed thousands of animals, many of them pets still wearing collars, being seized from the streets.
